I went to a car boot sale near my home.

There were lots of sellers getting rid of unwanted Christmas presents.

It’s an old silver English coin.

It looks quite new to me.

It does, doesn’t it?

I had a close look and it’s in good nick.
我仔细看过了，这枚硬币“尼克很好”。
Good Nick?

Who's Nick?
谁是尼克？
Oh, I don’t mean Nick as a person’s name.
噢，我不是说尼克是个人名。
When British people say ‘it’s in good nick’,
英国人说“它‘尼克很好’”时，
we mean ‘it’s in good condition’,
意思是说“它情况良好”，
especially if it’s something that’s very old but still looks new.
尤其是会用在说某样东西虽然非常古老但看上去仍然很新的时候。
Here are a few examples:
这里有几个例子：
I picked up a set of silver plates from an antique shop
我从古董店里挑到了一套银质器皿，
and they were in pretty good nick.
它们状况十分良好。
My grandpa loves his 1960s motorbike
我爷爷特别喜爱他那辆20世纪60年代的摩托车，
and has worked very hard to kept it in good nick.

I know it sounds a bit strange to use a word that’s like a person’s name in this phrase,

but it’s very authentic colloquial British English.
但是在英式英语里，这是一句非常地道的口语。
‘Nick’ here is slang for ‘condition’.
这里的“尼克”是“状况”的俚语说法。
I see.

Can we use the phrase to describe anything else in good condition?

Absolutely,

how about my grandmother,

she’s 96 and still does her own shopping,

she’s in good nick.

I hope I'll be in good nick when I get to her age.
