一、用作情态动词

意为“敢”，其后接动词原形，通常只用于否定句或疑问句以及 if 或 whether 之后，一般不用于肯定句。如：

I daren’t ring her again. 我不敢再给她打电话。

I don’t know whether he dare try. 我不知他是否敢试一试。

How dare you say such a thing to me?  你怎么敢对我说这样的话?

注：I dare say 是习惯说法(用于肯定句)，并不一定要译为“我敢说”，它所表示的是一种不肯定的语气，常译为“大概”“我想”。如：

You are tired, I dare say. 我看你也许是累了。

I daresay you’ve spent all your money by now. 我估计你现在钱已用完了。

后接完成式的用法：若要谈论过去情况，应在其后接动词完成式。此时同样只用于否定句或疑问句以及if或whether之后，一般不用于肯定句。如：

I didn’t like their new house, though I daren’t have said so. 我不喜欢他们的新房子，虽然我不敢这样说。

I daren’t have done it yesterday, but I think I dare now. 我昨天不敢做此事，但我想我现在敢做了。

二、用作实意动词

dare除用作情态动词外，还可用作实义动词，意为“敢于”，可以有词形变化，可用于各类句型(肯定句、否定句、疑问句及各类从句等)，其后可接不定式(有时也可省略to)。如：

Do you dare to say that I am not honest? 你敢说我不老实吗?

Most people hate him, but they don’t dare to say so. 大部分人都恨他，但他们不敢说出来。

I didn’t dare come before because I was told you were very strict. 我以前不敢来，因为我听说你非常严厉。
