在not…because…这一结构中，not 有时否定主句，有时否定从句，具体视语境而定。一般说来，若 not 否定主句，最好在because 之前用逗号，否则会引起歧义，如下面的句子在没有特定上下文时就有两种解释：

I didn’t go because I was afraid.

这个句子既可理解为“我没有去是因为害怕”，也可理解为“我不是因为害怕才去”。

为了避免语义的歧义，有两种通常的办法来解决定个问题：

方法一：将 because 从句前添加逗号

下面这个句子在没有上下文时有两种理解：

I didn’t go to town because l wanted to see my uncle.

理解一：我不是为了要看我叔叔才进城的。

理解二：我没有进城，因为我要看我的叔叔。

但若在 because 从句前加一个逗号，则只有一种理解：

I didn’t go to town, because I wanted to see my uncle. 我没有进城，因为我要看我的叔叔。

方法二：将 because 从句置于句首

下面这个句子在没有上下文时有两种理解：

I didn’t sing because Pam was there.

理解一：我没有唱歌，原因是帕姆在那儿。

理解二：我唱歌并不是因为帕姆在那儿。

但下面这个句子将because从句放在句首，则只有一个意思：

Because Pam was there, I didn’t sing. 因为帕姆在那儿，我没有唱歌。

另外，如果because之前有副词 just 修饰，一般认为 not 是否定从句而不是主句。如：

Don’t start flinging accusations just because you’re upset. 不要仅仅因为你心烦就开始指责别人。

Don’t get nervous just because the teacher might ask you a question. 别因为老师有可能提问你就过于紧张。

You shouldn’t get angry just because some people speak ill of you. 你不要因为有人说你坏话而生气。
