1. 用作形容词,表示“满足的”“满意的”,只用作表语,其后多接不定式或介词 with。如:
Are you content with your salary? 你对你的薪水满意吗?
I should be well content to stay here. 我很乐意呆在这儿。
若要用作定语,要用 contented(它也可用表语)。如:
There was a contented smile on his face. 他脸上露出了满意的微笑。
She is content with very little. 她易于满足。
2. 用作动词,为及物动词,它的意思不是“满足”“满意”,而是“使……满足”“使……满意”,其后总是接人作宾语(包括接反身代词)。如:
Nothing could content him. 什么也不能使他满足。
We should never content ourselves with book knowledge only. 我们切不可只满足于书本知识。
3. 用作名词,表示“满足”,是不可数名词。如:
He takes content in nothing. 他这个人从不满足。
另外,它还有以下用法:
(1) 表示“内容”,若指抽象意义,不可数;若指具体意义或具体所装的东西,则可数(通常用复数)。如:
The teacher returned his paper and said the content was very interesting. 教师还给他论文,说论文内容很有意思。
The contents of the telegram are as follows. 电报内容如下。
(2) 表示“含量”“容量”,通常用单数形式。如:
Oranges have a high vitamin C content. 橙子的维生素C含量很高。
(3) 表示“目录”,总是用复数形式,用于名词前作定语也是如此。如:
It is advisable to look at the contents page of a book, before buying it. 买书前最好是先看一看目录。
有时甚至还可与不定冠词连用。如:
Is there a contents? 有目录吗?
