《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》(1989年第四版) (商务印书馆)的sustain词条有这样一个句子：

Only the hope that the rescuers were getting nearer sustained the trapped miners, ie kept them cheerful and enabled them to stay alive. 遇难矿工盼望援救人员正在接近他们，这是他们赖以坚持下去的唯一希望。

该词典将 trap 译为“遇难”似乎不妥。

1．《现代汉语规范词典》对“遇难”的解释是：遭到意外或受迫害而死亡。

既然“遇难”暗指死亡，那么“遇难矿工”又怎么还有机会“盼望”呢？

2．英语词典对 trap 的解释是：to prevent someone from leaving a place, especially a dangerous place（困住，使陷于危险中），并没有“死亡”的意味。

建议将原译中的“遇难”改为“受困”。
