1. 表示“纸”，作为物质名词，是不可数。如：

It is made of paper. 它是纸做的。

Give me a piece [sheet] of paper. 给我一张纸。

但表示“写有字的纸”时，通常用复数形式。如：

His desk is always covered with papers. 他的办公桌上老是堆满写着字的纸。

2. 表示“报纸”“文件”“试题”“论文”等，均为可数名词。如：

I gave her a paper to read. 我给她一份报纸看。

The teacher was marking the papers. 教师在批改考卷。

I am reading a paper tomorrow. 我明天要读一篇论文。

The manager has not signed the papers. 经理没有在这些文件上签字。

3. 表示“文件”“证件”，通常用复数形式。如：

Can I see your papers, please? 我可以看看你的证件吗?

Your letter got buried under a pile of papers. 你的信压在一堆文件下面了。

2. 汉语说的“纸巾”，说成英语是paper towel。如：

Use a paper towel to soak up the cooking oil. 用纸巾把食油吸干。

3. 用于习语on paper，有两个意思，一是表示“写在纸上”“以书面形式”，二是表示“据书面材料”“在理论上”“从道理上说”。如：

Before we buy anything, let’s plan the kitchen on paper. 咱们先在纸上画出厨房的图样再买东西。

It’s a fine scheme on paper, but will it work in practice? 那计画不错，不过实践上是否可行?
