原则上说，police表示“警察”的总称，含有“警方”“警察当局”之意，其前通常用the（有时也可省略），形式上是单数，但含义上为复数；用作主语时，谓语要用复数。如：

I saw him being taken away by the police. 我看到他正被警察带走。

I’m against doing anything till the police arrive. 在警察到来之前我反对做任何事。

The police believe him to be dangerous. 警方认为他是个危险人物。

注意，当表示“一个警察”时，不能用它，即不能说a [one] police，而应根据情况用a policeman / a policewoman；不过，当表示多个警察时，可用它。如：

There were over 100 police on duty. 有超过百名警察值班。
