So what's that got to do with today's piece of authentic English?

Well, we can use the word 'ping' to describe something else.

I know that, Rob. 'Ping' is a short sharp sound – like a microwave makes to alert you that the food in it is cooked.
我知道，罗伯。“ping”就是形容一个又短又尖的声音，就像是微波炉加热食物的时间到了之后提示的声音。
But the word 'ping' is also an informal way of describing sending an email or a text message.
不过，在非正式的用法中，单词“ping”也可以指发邮件或发短信。
So if I ping you an email, I basically send you an email.
所以如果说“I ping you an email”，实际上就是说“我给你发了邮件”。
Exactly and... Oh, someone's pinged me a text message.
