learn可以用作延续性动词吗?  

二、专家学者对这一观点的看法  

对于learn能否用作延续性动词有两种截然不同的观点:一是learn不可以用作延续性动词,不可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体;二是learn可以用作延续性动词,可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体。  

1.认为learn不可以用作延续性动词,不可以和for+若干时间搭配用于完成体或完成进行体的代表性语法专著有:  

(1) 刘国善在其主编的《英语动词用法详解》(对外贸易教育出版社 199312月第1)p23和其总主编、徐树娟主编的《通用英语动词、动宾举行教程》(对外经济贸易大学出版社 20053 月北京第1)p30: He has been doing/learning studying his lessons all day(long).一整天踏都在做功课/学习功课/研读课业。(持续)  

比较:可以说How long have you studied English? For two years?(study属于持续动态动词,durative dynamic verbs)。不可以说How long have you learned English? For two years? (井上),因learn取完成体形式时,意指“学会”,属限界动态动词,terminative dynamic verbs。在不取进行体或完成体形式时,learn不可和表示持续时间的状语连用。He has been learning his shorthand for ages and is still unable to put it to use. 他学速记学了很久了,但是仍然不能使用。(持续到现在而无效应)  

笔者注:然而上述提及的两书分别在p28 p34上却把learn(学习)定义“持续行为动词(durative activity verbs)”,岂不是互相矛盾?  

(2)【日】井上义昌著《英美语惯用法辞典》(吴拓 杨应鹏译 湖南师范大学出版社 19915 月第1)p827:很多学生将How long have you studied English? study讲作learn,这种场合用learn时不合适的。learn 指学习之后“记住”,所以要讲的是How much have you learned?/ How many words have you learned?则可以,而How long...?之后用learn从意义上讲是与之不相称的。  

(3).【日】田中茂范等编、杨文江等编译《外研社英汉多功能词典》(外语教学与研究出版社 20087月第1)p1190study 表示“学习知识或技术”这一行为和过程,而learn则重点强调“是否掌握了所学内容”这一结果。因此,类似下列情况不用learnAlthough I have been studying English for five years, I cannot speak it well. 我已经学了5 年英语,但还是说得不好。  

2. 认为learn可以用作延续性动词,可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体的代表性语法专著有:  

(1) 宋慕法编著《英语时态漫谈》(上海译文出版社 198510月第1) p67:其他表示持续活动的动词如..., learn,...   He has learnt /has been learnt English for a long time.  

P68: How long haveyou been learning English?   

How long haveyoiu learnt English?  

He has learnt English for three years.  

(2) 郑树棠编著《英语动词与时态》(广西人民出版社 19868 月第1)p136:表示持续动作的动词带有一段时间的状语用于完成时,可以表示动作的持续,这些动词用于完成进行时也表示动作的持续,所以在这种情况下,这两种时态所表示的意义没有根本的区别。试比较:  

B. (a) How long have you learnt English ? 你学英语多久了?  

(b) How long have you been learning English ? 你学英语多久了?  

(3) 薄冰编著《英语时态》(开明出版社 保定20003月第2次印刷)p226She’s been learning English since she was a child. 她从小就学英文。  

(4) 北京大学英语系编《英语常用词用法词典》(商务印书馆20031 月修订第2)p508-509:这两个词(笔者注:指learn study)都可作“学习”讲,有时可以互换。例如:How long have you been learning (sdutying ) English?  

(5) A. J. Thomson and A. V. Martinet在其编著的A Practical English Grammar即《牛津实用英语语法》(第三版修订本) (陈则源、夏定雄译 外语教学与研究出版社 19921月北京第6次印刷) p268A Practical English Grammar (Fourth Edition) (外语教学与研究出版社 19912月第1)p173上指出:An action which began in the past and is still continuing or has only just finished can, with certain verbs, be expressed by either the presenmt perfect simple or the present perfect continuous. Verbs which can be used in this way include ..., learn, ...(彭义、李阳译:在表达一个在过去开始而现在仍在继续活刚刚结束的动作时,某些动词既可以用现在完成时,也可以用现在完成进行时。这样的动词有...learn, ...)  

How long have you learned English? 你学习英语多久了?  

How long have you been learning English? (译文同上)  

(6) L.G.Alexander Longman English Grammar (Twentieth impression 2003)9.33.1上指出:Some verbs like learn, ... naturaly suggest continuity and often occur with perfect progressives with since or for and also in questions beginning with How long? ( 雷航译:某些动词,如learn(),……本身就有持续性,故常用于带有since for的完成进行时;以及以How long开头的疑问句中。)  

(7). N D Turton and J B Heaton主编的Longman Dictionary of Common Errors(Eleventh impression 2003)p196How long have you been learning Italian?  

(8). R. A. Close 著的A reference grammar for students of English   

 ( Eighth impression 1985 Printed in Hong Kong):  

P15:  He has been learning English for four years.  

p250We’ve been learning this language for ten years (and are still learning it.)  

I’ve been learning Russian since we last met and have made some progress in it.   

 

三、分析论证  

从以上两种截然不同的观点对比中,我们可以看出:认为learn不可以用作延续性动词,不可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体的代表性语法专著主要是母语为非英语的语法专家学者编撰的,他们可能多多少少受到母语影响,从而片面夸大learn study的区别,却割裂了二者之间的联系。例如中国的语法专家学者可能受汉语的影响,片面地把learn和汉语中的“学会”对等起来,认为learn只能表示“学”的结果,而不能表示“学”的过程,结果自己为自己设置陷阱,以至于无法解释上文提及的众多的learn用作延续性动词,和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体的例证。  

认为learn可以用作延续性动词,可以和“for+若干时间搭配”用于完成体或完成进行体的代表性语法专著,主要是母语为英语的语法专家学者编撰的,也有母语为非英语的语法专家学者编撰的。前者对自己母语的掌握自不必说;而后者却能摆脱自己母语的束缚,既看到learn study之间有区别,不能混用,也看到二者之间有联系,有时可以互换。  

以上只是语法专家学者自己的看法,其他人士(主要是英美人士)也认同learn可以用作延续性动词,可以和“for+若干时间”搭配主要用于完成进行体。请看例证:

(2) I've been learning the ancient Japanese martial art of san tu dang for about 10 years now and that helps me keep my weight constant.   

(3) MUSICAL CHEERS "Timothy, four, has been learning cello for a few months and loves it.   

(4) For the past three years Brenda has been learning German at the Open Learning Centre on site and she puts it to good use on frequent trips abroad.  

(5) It was the first public appearance for Caroline, who has been learning the belly dance for about eight months.  

2. TIME CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1923-2006) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) (http://corpus.byu.edu/time):  

1950/02/13 Dockers' sons and farmers' sons from three-R grade schools were mixed in with middle-class youngsters who had been learning Latin since they were seven.  

3. BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2008) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/  

2007 At the time of the study, Participants 1 and 2 had been learning braille for about 12 months, and Participant 6 had started braille instruction.  

四、得出结论  

从以上不难得出结论:learn的的确确可以用作延续性动词,根据语法规则,延续性动词可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体,这可能是语法专家学者坚持 learn可以和“for+若干时间”搭配用于完成体或完成进行体的原因,然而其他英美人士却更习惯用完成进行体和“for+若干时间”搭配来表示“学”的过程,用完成体来表示“学”的结果,正如语言学家Edward Spair所说“条条语法规则有例外。”,或另一位语言学家所说“语法必须在惯用法面前低头。”
