■下面一道为2009年山东德州市中考英语试题：

―Sorry, what did you say just now?

―I asked ______.

A. when did he leave                            B. where you have been

C. whom will you go with                    D. how I could get to the station

所给答案为 D，但事实上 B 也是正确的。只是意思稍有不同：

若选 B，则为：

―Sorry, what did you say just now? 对不起，你刚才说什么了？

―I asked where you have been. 我问你去过什么地方。

若选 D，则为：

―Sorry, what did you say just now? 对不起，你刚才说什么了？

―I asked how I could get to the station. 我问我去车站怎么走。

 

■虽然在通常情况下，当主句谓语为一般过去时的时候，宾语从句要用过去时态与之呼应。但有些特殊情况是可以有例外的，比如当宾语从句是描述客观点真理时。比较：

The teacher told us that he knew everything. 老师告诉我们他知道一切。

The teacher told us that light travels faster than sound. 老师告诉我们光比声音传播得快。

第一句的宾语从句不是客观真理，故用了一般过去时，与其主句的过去时态相呼应；而第二句的宾语从句为客观真理，故没有用一般过去时，而是用了一般现在时。

 

■至于上面这道德州市的中考英语题也是特例之一，即当答话者要重复自己说过的话时，其中宾语从句通常用不与主句的过去时态相呼应，请看以下有关实例：

【实例一】摘自《英语用法指南》（Michael Swan 原著，外研社翻译出版）的第520节：

A：Mike’s on the phone. 迈克在打电话。

B：Sorry? 你说什么?

A：I said Mike’s on the phone. 我说迈克在打电话。

【实例二】摘自《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第 6 版（商务印书馆）的 pardon 词条：

A：You’re very quiet today. 你今天话很少啊。

B：Pardon? 什么？

A：I said you’re very quiet today. 我说你今天话很少。

【实例三】摘自《张道真英语用法》（张道真编著，商务印书馆）的 whether 词条

I asked whether there are any letters for me. 我问是不是有我的信。

【实例四】摘自《英语基础词汇用法词典》（周贞雄编著，金盾出版社）的 pardon 词条：

A：Where’s the post office, please? 请问邮局在什么地方?

B：I beg your pardon? 请问，你说什么?

A：I asked where the post office is. 我问邮局在什么地方。
