1. 类似以下这样的句子，first 后面的名词可以省略（若意思明确)，但其后接的动词不定式通常不能改为动名词。如：

He is always the first (guest) to arrive and the last toto leave. 他总是第一个到最后一个离开(的客人)。

He was the first in his family to go to college. 他是他们家第一个上大学的人。

2. 用于“It’s the first time＋that 从句”这类句型，此类句型的从句谓语一般要用现在完成时(若将主句的 it is 改为 it was, 则从句谓语通常用过去完成时)。如：

It is the first time I’ve seen an elephant. 这是我第一次看到大象。

That was my third time I had visited China that year. 那是那一年我第三次访问中国。

有时也可不用完成时而用其它时态，但较少见，学生宜慎用。
