■该书在5.18.3节(见181页)有这样一组例句和翻译：

All the country was against it. 所有国家都反对它。

Half the country was against it. 半数国家反对它。

All of the country was against it. 所有的国家都反对它。

Half of the country was against it. 有半数国家反对它。

■我们认为将all the country译为“所有国家”欠妥，因为句中的country是单数，不是复数；若是all the countries，那才是“所有国家”的意思。

■句中all the country的意思应是“全国人民”，all of the country也是“全国人民”的意思。

■同样的道理，half the country不是“半数国家”，而应是“全国有一半的人”，half of the country也是“全国有一半的人”。

■类似地，all the family的意思是“全家人”，不是“所有的家庭”。以下各例句摘自《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》

All the family are flourishing. 全家人身体都很好。

Her death was a great distress to all the family. 她去世后全家人极为悲痛。

She earns enough to keep herself and all the family in good clothes. 她的收入能让全家经常有好衣服穿。
