■该书的 1.47.2 节(第45页)有这样一句：

I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air. 我感到好像漂浮在空中一样。

 

■首先要说明一下，译文中的“漂浮”显然为“飘浮”之误。

■句中将 floating on air 译为“飘浮在空中”值得商榷。从语法上看，汉语的“我感到好像飘浮在空中一样”在英语中似乎应用虚拟语气，因为“我飘浮在空中”不会是事实，而应是一种假想，所以对应的英语似乎应是：I feel as if / as though I were floating on air. 而不会是：I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air.

■其实，floating on air 是个习语，它也可写成 walking on air，本人查了几本英汉词典，各词典对此的解释是“感到非常高兴”“极其高兴”“得意洋洋”“觉得飘飘然”等。本人同时还查了几本原版词典，其中新版的朗文英语词典对此的解释是to feel very happy，新版的剑桥高级英语词典对此的解释是 to be very happy and excited because something very pleasant has happened to you。下面是摘自英美原著或原版词典的几个例子：

When he got his exam results he was floating on air. 他得知考试结果后非常高兴。

Ever since she met Mark, she’s been walking / floating on air. 自从遇到了马克，她就一直得意洋洋。

The execution of this arrangement so thrilled Tollifer that he felt as though he were walking on air. 这事的安排使托力弗从心眼里乐了起来，觉得浑身飘飘然。

■建议将原句改译如下：

I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air. 我感到自己好像(有点)得意洋洋。

从句用的是陈述语气，说明“自己还真有点得意洋洋”。

■关于“飘浮在空中”的翻译

如果要将“飘浮在空中”译成英文，应该是float in the air，而不宜是 float on air。《朗文当代英语辞典》在 balloon 词条对 hot air balloon 的解释是这样的：a large bag of strong light cloth filled with gas or heated air so that it can float in the air. It has a basket hanging below it for people to stand in. 该词典在表示“飘浮在空中”时，用的就是 float in the air。
